PIELOBITE

Pielobite is extremely awesome way past cool!!! Aside from pasta, PIE was one of the foods most notably missing from Bugsnax. My personal idea was for a trapdoor spider, that would hide in sediment and use the metal tin to cover its burrow! Once, while scrying through pre-release Bigsnax material, I noticed something in the background…

The horns of this ancient Grumpus statue were unmistakably pie slices! At the time I was not able to tell anything more, so I didn’t know what pie it would be, only that it did not seem to be a flat-topped one like pumpkin or sweet potato.

Now, of course, we know Pielobite is a pecan pie! It may not be one of my favorite pies (mine is blueberry) but it is still a great pie, and has good reasoning behind it. There is already so much fruit in the game, so pecan is a good choice not only for some more food variety, but because it’s one of the pies where the flavor is obvious just from looking at it, without having to slice it!

When Pielobite is first encountered, it is in what I will call its Defense Forme. It has this plastic-looking lid, made of crystallized snakmatter, that protects it from Shrink Spice, making it basically invincible! But any Bugsnax player will recognize the symbol on its grocery store-style stickers as the grappler icon. These four stickers can be grappled off, with Pielobite scurrying away each time, to remove the lid!

Once the lid is gone, Pielobite assumes what I will call its Vulnerable Forme, though I think this is definitely the cooler of the two forms. Look how one slice in the back juts out, breaking part of the tin with it. That no doubt represents a telson, the “tail” that trilobites and some other arthropods have! I also want to say it’s great that its legs are ripped off from the tin, and also that this is the only Bugsnak based on an extinct creature, as far as I know. Really an epic snak!
